‘The doctor of the future will
give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame
in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease- Thomas Edison’. That was
the quote on the front cover of the HSC Cheras Specialist Hospital leaflet on
promoting the future of integrated physical medicine. It was to epitomize their
philosophy and vision for all of their patients,, that through patient
education, non-invasive techniques and treatements, cutting edge technology and
minimally invasive procedures, they are able to deliver healthcare at its very
best.
Today was the day that we, The Chirons
as a whole class went on a field trip to the Hospital Cheras Specialists
Center. Armed with enthusiasm and high spirits, we left International Medical
University at 4.30pm with the chartered bus, accompanied by our two beloved
chiropractic lecturers, Prof Rand Baird and Dr Marianne Campbell. After arriving
at Maluri, Cheras we were greeted by the Director of the Hospital, Dr Thomas Ong
who graduated from the Logan College of Chiropractic, St Louis, Missouri, USA.
We were then ushered to our seats at the clinic’s waiting area. There, Dr
Thomas Ong, started telling us bits and pieces of his story and how he became
the chiropractor he is today.
Listening to his story inspired me
to give my utmost perseverance in achieving my ultimate goal, which is making
my parents proud of me. He told us that the vision of his chiropractic group,
which is one of the largest in the whole Malaysia, is to be trusted and
inspire. First, you have to get the patients to trust you with their wellbeing
as patients will follow their doctors their entire lifetime. This is definitely
true. Because once that dr-patient bond is built, it’s one of the strongest assets
a doctor can get. And what good does it make, if we as a healthcare
professional don’t aspire to inspire people to get well. After listening to Dr Ong
as well, pushes me to want to work harder, instead of feeling indolent and
inert all the time as I’ve only one chance to make it good in life.
He also made me see the big
picture clearly on how things and problems in life are linked to each other and
how money isn’t everything. He talked about the battle and hardship a
chiropractor in general and also as a Malaysian might face. And he also said
how expensive it was to be treated by a chiropractor in Hong Kong, charging to
almost RM400 per session, for approximately 5 minutes! He also told us that he
believes in ensuring the patients go for their physiotherapy sessions after
undergoing adjustments by the chiropractic, and that’s why his physiotherapy
unit is one of the largest in the whole Malaysia. And when he touches on the
topic of evidence-based study, everything that we learn in IMU (International
Medical University) falls in place.
But in the end, it all comes down
to the question of, “what do you want in life”, because it all depends on you.
And slowly, but surely I’ll one day reach that goal of mine, by taking one step
at a time, constantly reminding myself and picking myself up when the tides are
rough. After all, the only way to eat an elephant is by taking one bite at a
time.
Again, I was inspired to share with you on this. Hope you are feeling rather much inspired as I am : )
